Like A Trip Back To Middle School

last post of the day, i promise

I just didn't want five entries worth of concerts to be the most recent thing on the blog!

So instead I'll list seven months worth of "Person of the Month" . . . hopefully I'll get around to actually writing up the posts about each of these people, but in the meantime, here's the list! Annd I know I have a bunch of duplicates (and triplicates and quadruplicates) for the year, but what can I say, I have some pretty consistently amazing friends.

May 2008 - Troy P.
June 2008 - Briton S.
July 2008 - Briton S.
August 2008 - Scott F.
September 2008 - Christine P. and Shauna S.
October 2008 - Briton S.
November 2008 - Becky K.

Summer 2008 goes to Briton . . . and to save you the suspense, he's pretty much a lock for Person of the Year 2008 too, so everyone else has a month and a week to step it up!

Person of Law School

PERSON OF LAW SCHOOL
2005 - 2008

PAT C.

Just the other day, Pat commented on how his "Person of the [ ]" worthiness peaked in December 2005. Although I stopped regularly giving out the P.O.M. award shortly after he won it, and though I can't say for sure that he ever would have won an individual month after that, his selection for "Person of Law School" is an easy choice. Overall, I can't think of a single other person who has played such a large role in the past three years of my life.

I knew I wanted to be friends with Pat before we even met. And as proof, I have a snippet from an entry I wrote in my much more personal and private "blog" nearly three years ago:

The other nice "birthday acknowledgement" surprise came from this kid Patrick from Hofstra, who I "met" on Facebook (he added me on MySpace yesterday as well) and who is in all of my classes. He got my screenname from Facebook and sent me an IM yesterday afternoon to say happy birthday, which was nice. Maybe we'll be friends. I hope so, so that I can refer back to this entry and be like "hey! That was the first time I mentioned Patrick!" August 27, 2005

He became the first person that I added to the "Hofstra" section of my buddy list, and remembering now how I wanted to know him then makes it even crazier to me that Pat actually became one of the best friends I made at Hofstra. We started as AIM friends before gradually developing an "in person" friendship through EMF's Larry Lockett project; by the end of 1L year, between Bluebooking, late night IM paper writing, merciless teasing because of my extreme sadness over Tony Almeida's death on 24 (although apparently I got the last laugh there, since enough people were pissed off about his death to actually bring him back to the show, even if he's going to be a bad guy), Kingdom of Loathing, and covert study sessions, he'd become my best friend at law school. The summer after 1L year, an apartment broker showed Mary and me an apartment that was coincidentally three or four houses down from Pat, and we became neighbors.

Over the next two years, Pat and I went through periods where we saw each other and talked to each other less than we had, but ultimately, I always knew that Pat was someone that I could count on to be there for the fun times, like birthdays, and for the not-so-fun times, like sitting in my apartment for a few hours waiting for the Verizon guy to come while I went to class. I couldn't possibly begin to list here all of the law school memories I have that involve Pat, but one thing is for sure: in the three years since I received an IM from a stranger on my 24th birthday, Pat became and remained one of the most consistent people in my life.

I guess this is already long enough (although in my defense, this is technically about 33 p.o.m.'s all in one), so to wrap it up, I'll just say a quick thank you to Pat for three years of secondhand smoke, more comic book trivia than I ever could have wanted, and just for being him. Next stop: two months of Pieper and then the Bar Exam (which apparently he told Briton's mom that I was responsible for ensuring that they both pass). Looking forward to it ;)

Person(s) of the Semester: Spring 2008

PERSON(S) OF THE SEMESTER
SPRING 2008

BRITON S. AND BECKY K.

What can I say . . . I mean seriously, was there any doubt that these two would win this? Let's be honest, Briton and Becky, both individually and collectively, will eternally be synonymous with "Spring 2008" in my mind. I'm not going to lie, there have been times through the years where coming up with a P.O.M. has been a stretch (hence the award's disappearance for two years!), but Becky and Briton couldn't possibly be a clearer and more obvious choice. Although Briton and I have been friends since first year, Becky and I grew closer this year through Law Review, her living with Briton, and our mutual love for Eric Lane. This semester though, both Briton and Becky were without a doubt my closest friends. I know that their individual "Person of the Month" posts go through a lot of this already, but this semester we enjoyed lots of nights out, including a (probably fortunately) failed attempt to see Ashlee Simpson, the best cheese fries ever made in the history of cheese fries, the PJF Auction (followed by a "sloppy" night with Becky and me at Capers's apartment), Benihana (or should I say "Asian Hooters"), boy movies like Cloverfield and Iron Man with Briton, girl movies like Made of Honor and Definitely, Maybe with Becky, and truly amazing figure skating movies with the both of them, laser tag, my first real NYC St. Patrick's Day celebration, Tuesday night Chipotle dinners with Briton followed by Troy time, many trips to the Hofstra Deli with Becky (my official Dr. Pepper vs. Cherry Coke decider), IMs with dead bears (or half alive bears), Barristers', Peeps fights in the microwave, SCRABULOUS! . . . I know that I'm forgetting stuff and that I will probably be adding to this list as I think of more.

I rung in 2008 with Briton, probably one of the most enjoyable New Years' I've ever had, and although we're only five months into it, it's been a good year. School wise and life wise, I was happier this past semester than I've been in a while, and I know that having friends like Briton and Becky have made that possible. It was a fitting end to law school to be hooded next to Briton at graduation - I could not have imagined my law school experience without him, and I could not have imagined this past semester without the two of them. So thank you to Briton and Becky for that, and for everything. I can't wait until June 14th for a sleepover party with my people of the semester!

Person of the Month: April 2008

PERSON OF THE MONTH
APRIL 2008*

ANTHONY C.

When I first made Law Review, there were very few 2Ls that I knew at the time. Anthony was one of the first of the Section A "strangers" that I met when we shared office duty the second or third week of school. I quickly realized just how cool Anthony was, and as I've gotten to know him better over the past two years, I've discovered that he's even cooler than I thought he was. I had the fortune of sharing the desk next to his this year as we were both Board members on the Law Review and I've gotta say, the seating arrangements were pretty awesome because aside from getting to sit next to one of the coolest people ever, when April 2008 rolled around, I became privy to all sorts of top secret (Anthony likened it to knowing the Oscar winners before opening the winner and reading it) information about the banquet. And not only did Anthony share some of his banquet excitement with me, but he also sat me at the coolest table ever (seriously . . . legen - wait for it - dary), which was his table, which made it even better because Anthony made the seating arrangements and could have placed himself with anyone he wanted, haha. Anyway. Sitting next to Anthony always guaranteed a laugh or a good story, a smiling face and a voice of sanity, and a even a pre-Pieper pep talk. Thanks Anthony for a great month and a great couple of years!

* I just want to point out that April 2008's honorable mention goes to Billy M., who amazingly thanked me in his student note, published in volume 36.2 of the law review. A link will be provided when available - thank you Billy!

Person of the Month: March 2008

PERSON OF THE MONTH
MARCH 2008

BRITON S.
(who apparently does not approve of his winning)

One of the tragedies of my failure to properly maintain my website after April 2006 is that I ended up neglecting to name P.O.M.s for nearly two years and that people like Briton are just winning for the first time now. Because there is no doubt that Briton would have *owned* this award over the past couple of years. Briton's been one of the best, if not the best, friends I've had at law school and hands down one of the most awesome people in my life ever. But I guess since this is a Person of the Month award I'll try to limit my praise to the month of March. March involved: the PJF Auction (where we were very rudely outbid for a dinner with Silber by the kid sitting on the other side of Briton - how rude!), continuing the search for the perfect cheese fries (Ruby Tuesday's - not bad; Social's - better), Barrister's, THE CUTTING EDGE! 1, 2 and 3 (my favorite part about that is that he got mad at Becky and me for talking through CE3 and missing parts of it), and then Blades of Glory (March 2008 will forever be "figure skating movie month" to me), St. Patrick's Day (where I discovered Briton's AMAZING ability to take group self portrait pictures - seriously amazing), our adventures in Waldbaums searching for 50% off Easter candy and tiny plastic swords and doing Peeps wars in his microwave (which was documented in photos, but alas, the blog entry never happened), fun times in NYC . . . I think my favorite Briton moment of the entire month was driving home from the city over Spring Break and me, Briton and Becky were in the backseat, and "We Will Rock You" was playing on the radio and when it went into "We Are the Champions", Briton suddenly got excited and said "I just had a dream that it was going to go into this song!" I don't know why it was so funny but it just made me laugh again now remembering it. Also, when I found out that Mary would be leaving me (sniffle) a few months earlier than expected, Briton was a life saver by agreeing to move in to take her place . . . and to have a Full House complete series marathon with me. Let's be honest, it just doesn't get much better than that. Sooo . . . sorry this was late, but it couldn't go to someone more deserving. Briton's so money and he doesn't even know it.

Person of the Month: February 2008

PERSON OF THE MONTH:
FEBRUARY 2008

BECKY K.*

Considering that it was only twenty-nine days, February felt like the longest month EVER - I think it was just that eventful. I spent the first week of February harassing Becky about the amazingness that is laser tag. I don't know if I convinced her that it was awesome, but at least I convinced her to go! So our team kind of sucked, but that night was a lot of fun anyway (it involved nearly sleeping in the law review office and forcing Micah and Willie, under duress, to befriend us each on Facebook). She even came and picked me up the next day so that I wouldn't have to walk to her house to get my car :) The rest of the month included some more drunk nights, including her text message proclaiming "I want to be together forever with you!" (that I made her resend when I accidentally deleted it!), an attempt to see Ashlee Simpson (see below - oh man, I almost just typed supra), a LOT of games of Scrabulous, a nearly impossible Lost trivia contest that I will admit was not entirely fair, but since I won I can't complain too much, a movie night to watch 13 Going on 30, adventures buying baby shower supplies in Party City (only $35 worth, not $90!) and then decorating the restaurant -- and Jennifer's Wills seat -- . . . have I mentioned a lot of Scrabble games? Anyway, long story longer, it's been a fun month, and Becky's been a good friend, and I'm sure that more fun times are to come. Thanks, Becky!

Person of the Month: January 2008

In January 2002, I began the tradition of naming a "Person of the Month" on my website each month - somebody who stood out in my mind as one of the bright spots in the month, whether through a single act or consistent awesomeness. In January 2004, the award was renamed to the "D. Nemchek Person of the Month Award" in honor of its most frequent winner, who was thereby retired. The award continued as the D.N.P.O.M. for two more years until last awarded in April 2006. Now, nearly two years later, the new and improved Person of the Month award is back, with its original name (as it has been more than four years since his retirement, I feel that it is only fair to allow Dan the opportunity to win the award again should he be so deserving). With that said, I present to you:

PERSON OF THE MONTH
JANUARY 2008

(picture stolen off of facebook courtesy of b.s.)

SCOTT F.*

Scott was actually the last D.N.P.O.M. award winner back in April 2006, so it seems only fitting that he should be the first winner of the new revamped award. When Scott last won, I was just getting to know him and we were strictly AIM friends - in the two years since, he's become so much more than just an online buddy and a friend of Pat's. Scott was one of the first people that I saw in 2008, so I actually did see him in the month of January, even though it was just for a few hours! I've hung out with Scott less than five times in two years, but that said, one hang out with Scott is worth 100 with pretty much anybody else. New Year's Eve was one of the most fun nights ever - dare I say the most fun night of 2007? - as we drank and made fun of people and told stories and Scott played me voicemails that Pat and I had left him well over a year earlier and I don't think I can properly describe how much fun it is to hang out with Scott so I suggest you all try it yourselves. So starting January '08 with Scott was definitely awesome in itself. But the triggering P.O.M.-worthy event didn't occur until a couple weeks later when, after receiving a slightly incoherent IM from me that concerned him, Scott called me at 4am just to check in and then listened for the next hour (both on the phone and then on IM) as I babbled about everything that was on my mind. I've lost track of the number of times that Scott has been there for me since we met, and a silly little "person of the month" award on a website couldn't possibly begin to thank him for that. I am so grateful that he is part of my life - he is a true friend, and my favorite Friend. ;)

*Note: I'm trying this new thing where I don't list people's full names on here, seeing that it's easily google-able. Should any of my winners decide that they *do* want their winning to show up in google searches, by all means let me know and I'll make it happen.
